Blame it on the Irish

Ah, so this is the story, the reason so many Americans are ashamed of their bodies, the reason we are so confused and uptight about nudity in America.  We can blame it on all those Irish ancestors who influenced our national gene pool shortly after the Puritans finished their self-righteous handiwork.  Their blood still courses through our veins.

I suspect our shame is rooted in centuries of religious doctrine, and that we have inherited it and adopted it as our own.  Seems I remember something about God creating  Adam and Eve in His own image, nude, that they lived blissfully naked in the Garden of Eden until Eve surrendered to temptation and ate from the tree of knowledge.  The key words here are “in His own image” and “blissfully nude”.  Seems more of us would be adding this up and drawing the right conclusions.  Why every beach in America is not clothing optional is beyond me.

Well, back to the Irish.  This delightful article published in a Dublin paper may explain some of our hyper modesty.

The bare truth of why we all like to look at naked women

By Kevin Myers,  the Independent,ie, Dublin, June 16 2009

‘Irish Women and Public Nudity’, not so long ago, would have ranked with ‘Nuclear Fission; the Eskimo Contribution’ as the title of the world shortest book.

Along with ‘Zulus and Supersonic Flight’. Or ‘Lesbian Camogie in Saudi Arabia’. Or ’101 uses for Pigs’ Foreskins’, by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Simply, Irish women didn’t do public nudity. To be sure, Irishmen weren’t all that great at it, but Irish women were as likely to appear naked in front of strangers as Mother Teresa was to do a pole dance in front of the Pope.

I know three Irishwomen who once went to a naturist beach in France, but wore bikinis throughout. And they actually boasted about this on their return, declaring how “weird” the nudists were. No, girls, we know who the weird ones were. The actress Olivia Treacy once proudly declared that she was so principled that she had performed Lady Chatterley on the stage, fully clothed. Which is rather like mounting a production of ‘Hamlet of Sunnybrook Farm’. And Irish fashion models would refuse to do underwear shows. Girls had to be brought over from pagan England — the whores! the sluts! — to perform in Dublin’s annual commercial lingerie parade.

And far from this infantile prudery being a matter for embarrassment and shame, it was actually one of national pride. Irish women — it was said — didn’t demean themselves by taking off their clothes in public.

While male nudity on the stage became a commonplace in Dublin theatre, female nudity was almost unknown. English actresses such as Diana Rigg and Helen Mirren bared all on the London stage, and in film, and no one thought the worse of them: but their Irish she-peers still donned swaddling clothes in public. A priggish and grisly she-neurosis masqueraded as a Hibernian virtue. It took the American photographer Spencer Tunick to prove that the days of Irish reticence about public nudity were largely over.

American painter Paul Cadmus is best known for the satiric innocence of his frequently censored paintings of burly men in skin-tight clothes and curvaceous women in provocative poses, but he also created works that celebrate same-sex domesticity.

Abducted

Abducted

Little does he know, when she pulls in front of him just as he turns into the parking lot, that this event has changed the course of his life.  His coffee splashes on the floor when he hit the brakes.  A quick flash of anger as he watches her drive on into the parking lot, oblivious to the fact he had the right-of-way.  He sees her again after he parks, when she passes in front of his van; a suburban clone, blonde, ponytail, distracted by some frivolous conversation on a cell phone while trying to see over the hood of a tank-size SUV.

She stops a few cars down to wait for an elderly couple get into their car and vacate their parking space.  Why didn’t she take the space six cars back and simple walk the extra distance?  Two cars pull to a stop behind her.  They have to wait for her to get out of the way.  She honks, apparently to hurry the elderly couple.

He shakes his head.  How many of these clones has he seen before, the type that thinks the world revolves around them, utterly unaware of the real world, or other people’s sensibilities, spoiled from the moment they’re born, little girls that grow up selfish and self-serving, then marry the ambitious fraternity man that has to have just the right female to call his wife?

Maybe this bothered him more these days, now that his business had gone under, now that he had lost his house and was living in the lake cabin left to him by his uncle, all heaped on the pain of losing his wife in an automobile accident less than a year before.  A year ago this obnoxious female wouldn’t have roused a second thought.

He watches her maneuver the big SUV into the parking space, step down out of the cab and start toward the grocery store, stopping to confront the cart attendant about a cart that had gotten in her way.  He can see the boy trying to be polite even though she’s talking down to him, likely accusing him of not doing his job.

She’s blessed—his whole world has fallen apart.  She will fill her shopping cart with expensive organic food and the latest high-energy sports drinks.  He’ll buy sugar and coffee and maybe a pot roast.  His money will run out within a few months.  He feels powerless, like the world had passed him by and he will never catch up.  His optimism and ambition have been reduced to pangs of inadequacy, failure, unable to solve problems or make decisions; a low that often feels like a physical pain, a low he had never realized even existed.

Yes Virginia, There Really Is Bisexuality*

The recent opinion editorials and responses highlight how much of a flash point this topic is in the LGBT community. As fun as it is to banter about, what does the research suggest? In the case of bisexuality, the picture is “Yes, there is bisexuality.”*

together

Every once in a while the research makes the picture more confusing. The “*” requires us to look at the fine print. The fine print almost always requires a clarification of what we mean by the term “bisexual.” The lack of precision in understanding the term is the source of much of the confusion.

Starting with the granddaddy of psychology, Sigmund Freud defined bisexuality as the ability to get sexual pleasure from a male or female. Strictly speaking, he emphasized genital satisfaction and suggested since all of us can be sexually stimulated by anyone we are all bisexual. Obviously, this view has significant limitations.

More Gloom and Doom for Iran

Watching the news coverage of the Iranian election, as the cameras panned the throngs lined up to vote, I saw what appeared to be a population of rational, logical, forward thinking people.  Except for the lack of women (a sign their rational appearance could be deceptive), the scene could have been in any democratic western country in the world.

I find it difficult to believe, especially since so many younger voters were active in this election, that the population chose to endorse inflation, unemployment and being ostracized by the west by voting for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad two to one.  How can an entire people of a large country be so entirely different from the rationale of the entire free world?  Can a religion actually be that powerful?

Not everyone in Iran fits the mold, attested to by the massive and immediate protests.  Perhaps these people want to join the brotherhood of man.  Perhaps they understand and want to exercise the human spirit.  Perhaps they want to identify with what the rest of the free world largely defines as normal.  They might even recognize the need for a rational dialogue with Israel.  Perhaps there’s hope.

The Powerful Art of Thomas Eakins

Thomas Eakins

Thomas Eakins

By age twelve, growing up in Philadelphia, Eakins was already displaying his talent for art.  After studying art in Pennsylvania and Paris, finding himself more interested in human anatomy than the Impressionist movement, he went on to develop his anatomically precise style.

thomaseakins3

A letter to his father in 1868 made his fascination with the human body clear:  She [the female nude] is the most beautiful thing there is in the world except a naked man, but I never yet saw a study of one exhibited … It would be a godsend to see a fine man model painted in the studio with the bare walls, alongside of the smiling smirking goddesses of waxy complexion amidst the delicious arsenic green trees and gentle wax flowers & purling streams running melodious up & down the hills especially up. I hate affectation.

How one can look at art such as Eakins and still find the human body shameful or anything other than nature’s finest work, is beyond me.

Eakins is credited with bringing photography in to the world of art.  With these college students, he captures the beauty of the male form, human energy, and male camaraderie.

The Swimming Hole (1884-5) (above), is considered his finest study of the nude.  The figures involved were his students and friends.

Makes you wonder why anyone would want to wear clothes.

The Male Psyche

Understanding the Male Psyche

Trying to comprehend the male psyche is like trying to comprehend the Universe, but possibly more of a challenge, though worthwhile when considering the particular male you may be interested in.

The first part is easy.  His looks.  To you he is beautiful.  You want someone that looks like him.  Done deal as far as that department is concerned.  The next part is also fairly easy: the chemistry that’s likely to develop quickly between the two of you, or not develop at all.  You like the way he smiles, the way he smells, the feelings you get when you are close.  Two bases are covered, chemistry and physical appeal, you’re ready to fall in love.  You’re ready, but you’re also facing the possible challenges of the male psyche.

Studies have defined the male psyche by seven categories: shame, emotional absence, insecurity, selfishness, aggression, self-destruction and sexual behavior.

Within these seven categories lies the answer as to whether the two of you are compatible or not.  In sync in all seven, great.  On the other hand being at odds with just one of them can damage or destroy a relationship, unless one of you are prepared to compromise for the rest of your life, or the other has the ability to recognize a character flaw within himself and is willing to change.

Sometimes, usually at the beginning of a relationship, the signs of a character flaw are subtle, or easily ignored because you are so head-over-heels crazy about him.  But eventually you realize that can of beer he never forgets to open after dinner is actually a case and a half over the weekend . . . and you don’t drink!

Seven Categories of the Male Psyche

All seven categories are influenced by the the indoctrination almost every male receives from the moment he is born; it’s either a positive and healthy indoctrination; or a negative one, typically where the boy is taught to be a man within the narrow framework of what so frequently defines masculinity in today’s world.  In other words, not enough input from his mother.

An Interesting Take on Adult Films

I ran across this article by Don Charles, a writer with a number of interesting credentials.  He writes about how bisexuality and homosexuality relates to Christianity, the Bible and Jesus.  Whether or not you agree with his point of view in every detail, you may find his perspective refreshing and sensible.  His blog address is here.

The Big Nasty . . . by Don Charles

It may surprise readers of this blog to know that I sometimes watch Gay adult films. Gasp! An avowed Christian, consuming pornography? Well, it wouldn’t be the first time, would it? I’m pretty sure Christians (as well as Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and members of other faiths) comprise a substantial portion of the adult film industry’s customer base and always have. We’re sexual beings, just like everybody else on this planet. Some of us even consider ourselves connoisseurs of erotic art. Yet, celebration of sexuality is supposed to be anathema to us. We’re reputed to exercise strict control over our carnal instincts (hypocritical televangelists notwithstanding). What’s the truth about Christianity and sex? You may well ask: Is it wrong for religious folk to watch adult films, view erotic art, or in any way affirm sexuality outside the institution of marriage?

My answer comes in the form of a quote from the Savior: There is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile . . . for it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: Fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy slander, pride (and) folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person (Mark 7:15, 16, 21-23). Whether pornographic products have a positive or negative impact depends on the person using them, and how they’re used, in my opinion. If partaking of adult entertainment leads a Christian to commit acts of sexual violence, promiscuity or adultery, the impact is clearly negative. In Mark 9: 43-48, the Savior instructed us on how to handle bad influences in our lives. He said: If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to Hell. So your behavioral response to pornographic material will determine whether it’s safe for you to consume or not.

j7a

Obviously, the amount of time spent consuming a product as intoxicating as erotica should be moderated. Those who tend to become obsessed with images of nudity and lust would do well to consider abstinence. For most Christians, I suspect watching adult films amounts to no more than a harmless, occasional pastime. However, there are certain kinds of erotic film that Christians and all principled people should abstain from watching. Films with underage performers, certainly! Films that depict adulterous relationships would fall into that category, too. Sado-masochist subject matter should be approached with caution; the more “edgy” the feature, the less likely it is to be appropriate for viewing. Often, just looking at the DVD sleeve will alert you when a particular X-rated movie goes too far. The adult entertainment industry has occasion to market some highly unsavory images, particularly where Gay sexuality is concerned. I was reminded of this just recently when I went online to buy an adult title for a friend of mine.

Wilhelm von Gloeden

Wilhelm von Gloeden

Born in Germany in 1856, Wilhelm von Gloeden was a master photographer before the turn of the century.  His most notable work was that of young boys photographed in Sicily.

nudes20

His natural and emotional images have rarely been mirrored since.

nudes9

He found himself in the right time and place; the people of Sicily were not of a mind to feel threatened by his work, nor did they object to the nature of his photography.  In this day and time our moral sensibilities would be all a twitter; i.e. I thought the sky was falling after that split second glimpse of Janet Jackson’s nipple.

classical14

Of the 3000 plus photographs taken by von Gloeden, some 2500 did not survive WWII fascist Italy.  The police, during the Mussolini era, deemed them pornography and destroyed them.
